The key subway station in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, was tore by an explosion yesterday during the evening rush hour. According to the reports of President Alexander Lukashenko, about 100 people were injured and 11 killed. The reason that caused the explosion wasn’t determined immediately, but following the RIA Novosti news agency, Lukashenko said that he didn’t discount the possibility that the blast was organized “from outside”.
Explosion Of The Key Subway Station
According to the several witnesses, the explosion hit at the moment when the passengers were stepping off the train at the Oktyabrskaya station at 6 p.m. At the end of the work day, the station, where two subway lines of Minsk intersect, was crowded with passengers, reports The Associated Press. Besides, this station is located within 100 meters of the Palace of the Republic, the concert hall that is often used for the ceremonies of the government, and the residence of the president.
Alexander Lukashenko, the authoritarian leader of the country, often stated that the outside forces try to destabilize the regime, being under the pressure over his opposition suppression from the West. Thus, he considers that the organizers of the explosion can be looked for “outside“.
