Recently Tiktok announced about replacing the Discover tab by rolling out a new Friends tab at the place.
It will be reaching more people in the coming weeks. The company gave this news by tweeting, “As we continue to celebrate community and creativity, we are bringing a Friends Tab to more people over the coming weeks, which will allow you to easily find and enjoy content from people you are connected with, so you can choose even more ways to be entertained on Tik Tok.” Along with a screenshot attached to the tweet.
TikTok is a short video app founded under the parent company Byte Dance by Zhang Yiming in September 2017. In November 2017, the founder worked their best to merge the already famous Musical.ly and spent nearly $ 1 Billion on the acquisition. Around 40% of the users on the platform are of the 18-24 age group. On the Friends tab, the user can see the content posted by their friends they have been connected with or follow back on Tik Tok. If you are not associated with any of your friends on Tik Tok, the app will suggest you connect with your Contact list of Facebook friends. Along with all this, the app will also show an option of people you may know and an opportunity to connect with them directly. However, this comes up with many pros and cons. Users will surely miss out on some excellent and watchable content they can reach out to while using the Discovery tab.
The company is now focussing more on connections and friendships than discovering, as it will now recommend people based on connections and contacts we follow. However, for some users, it may not look like a very innovative and different step as it can easily clash with the followers’. The new Friends tab can easily be mistaken for the old Followers tab. Though, it is more of a personal thing and will extend the functionalities of the already launched tab. It will shoes us more intrapersonal and personal options regarding the account we follow or the videos we watch. The placement of the newly created Friends tab will be exactly as the earlier used Discover tab.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra said the tab was first spotted last month. This would be a significant step by Tik Tok to replace the already impressive discover tab, which shows its users a variety of content and trending videos. The Discover tab also contains a search box for any particular content according to our desire. The search tab is also included in the top right corner of the application, through which we can search for any artist or specific video with the suggestion of related content and previously explored options.
The company can also use the recently made change on the interface of Tik Tok to generate engagement directly. Connecting Facebook and our contact friends will gain more users to sign up, increasing its engagement rate to a reasonable extent. It is a profitable option for Tik Tok rather than any discovery option. Also, most of the functions of the discovery tab can be quickly restored using the “For you option” as it will still recommend the videos. Eventually, they see more benefits in the Friends tab by getting more assignation compared to the other thing at the moment.
Till now, the option has not been made available for all, but maybe in the coming few weeks, it will be rolling out this feature for all. The company hasn’t released a fixed date for the launch of this feature for all. Through these updates, Tik Tok is slowly on the verge of becoming an application of networking, which can be a real competition for some fellow apps. As this new point of contact seems beneficial for Tik Tok, it can lessen down the market value and shares of some companies such as Instagram and Snapchat. As with the point of this pace of interactions between people, it will slow down Instagram’s market in the long term, and with its increasingly engaging nature, this doesn’t seem reasonable to other such apps as well.
